Update: Baby born at Roseland gas station

ROSELAND — Baby Eva Samone entered the world this morning in the front seat of a car, parked near the gas pumps of the KB Express Mart.

Gas station clerk Audrea Labadie, 19, said she was behind the counter when a man rushed in screaming for 911 about 10 minutes before 8 a.m..

“I started to hand him the phone,” Labadie said. “And he looked at me and said, ‘No, you do it.’”
Labadie, on the phone with 911 dispatchers, talked George Atkinson and Traci Ruscio through the miracle of birth.

“I thought holy crap,” said Labadie. “I was just freaking out, but the 911 lady was talking me through it.”

Labadie said the dispatcher would give her directions, which she then passed on to Atkins, who delivered the baby.

Less than four minutes after they arrived at the gas station, Labadie said the baby was born.

The 911 dispatcher told Labadie that she needed a string to tie off the umbilical cord.

“But we didn’t have any string anywhere,” Labadie said.

So she cut off her shoelace, handed it to Atkinson and watched as he tied off the cord.

Labadie said paramedics soon arrived and began helping with the newborn.

Atkinson said the baby girl – who they named Eva Samone – and her mom were both doing well. They were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

As he watched the ambulance leave, Atkinson got on the phone to a family member.

“You have a little granddaughter,” Atkinson said. “They’re taking her to the hospital now.

“No, we’re at the gas station. She started to come out, so we pulled over. We delivered her right here at the gas station.”

Roseland is just across the border from me, it’s kind of in the same place as South Bend. Kinda hard to explain….but then we have ….this link from Ann Arbor where a baby was born on her front lawn.
Wouldya look at that? We have babies being born all over the place, unattended by medical personel. Hmm whodathought??…..

  1. A shoelace! What a handy little item.

Love the new look of your blog Kris. It looks Great 🙂

  2. Wow, that’s amazing! I would go insane if I started delivering a baby at a gas station! Or any other place rather than a hospital for that matter!

  3. At least they didn’t name the baby after the gas station to commemorate the event like some people do.

  4. amazing how babies insist on being born, they don’t even care if there is no doctor there… I am always dissapointed when I hear the 911 dispatcher tell them to tie off the cord… who trains these people?
